Located in the Derwent Valley, once a timber and mining town. Logs and osmiridium ore (natural alloy used in fountain pens, munitions, needles and electrical contacts) used to be railed out from a yard just west of the township of Fitzgerald. The trains stopped running and the track closed in 1995 due to flood damage past New Norfolk.

The sealed road west from Maydena was built by Hydro Tasmania to the Hydro Power Station at Strathgordon. The road was well constructed to accommodate the heavy loads that would have been needed to transport materials for the dam construction at Strathgordon. Unlike many other sealed roads in Tasmania this one has stood up well.

Maydena is now made famous for the Maydena Bike Park. The World Mountain Bike Championships are held here.
